    Many of you have noticed that our birch trees have red fuzzy “stuff” on their leaves.

    The grounds committee contacted Whitney Tree to find out what this is.  Their answer is that our trees have Aphid damage - Spiny witch-hazel gall Aphid.

    This is not a problem for the trees and is only cosmetic.  At this point they do not recommend any treatment.  We will continue to monitor the trees, however,

    and see how they do in the future.

    If you have any further tree concerns, please contact a member of the Grounds Committee.  Thank you.

    On Monday, May 12th, the Falmouth Town Council voted to approve the seasonal outdoor garden center at Walmart. The garden center has been operating on a "temporary" basis for the past three years. The Council also approved a related proposal to improve Hat Trick Drive, which runs behind Walmart to Clearwater Drive, as a public access road. This road would offer access to Lunt Road and may reduce the traffic on Farmgate Road.

    Representatives of Tidewater homeowners - myself, Susan Gilpin, Betty Andrews, and several others -- lobbied hard for improvements to the proposed landscaping/buffering to better screen the Walmart outdoor space adjacent to Clearwater Drive and visible from the corner of Marigold and Farmgate roads. This involved attending and speaking at four public meetings as well as meetings with individuals or smaller groups.

    At the May 12th meeting Councillors referred frequently to the need to address the concerns of Tidewater residents. One councillor also telephoned Clifford Gilpin to thank the neighborhood for its input to the discussion.

    The advocacy for visual improvements resulted in several improvements, which are now on public record,  as follows:

    - a significant increase in the number and size of trees to be planted in front of the garden center facing Clearwater Drive: 6 white firs 6 to 8 feet tall, 5 red maples, 10 Spirea, 12 Northern Bayberry, and 12 Rhododendrons;

    - removing the existing ditch and planting the trees and shrubs in a slight berm along the Clearwater Drive right-of-way

    - an undertaking from the town to take responsibility for the maintenance of the plantings in the right-of-way

    - an undertaking from the town to seek the funding to continue the proposed sidewalk from the front of Walmart all the way to Route 1.

    Nathan Poore, the Falmouth Town manager, also agreed to continue to work with Tidewater residents on suggestions to provide adequate buffering along the improved and realigned Hat Trick Drive where it will join Clearwater Drive. This agreement was reiterated during the May 12th town council meeting. The work on Hat Trick Drive is not expected to begin before 2015.

    We received notice late yesterday that Whiney Tree would be inoculating those of our trees requiring treatment for shot hole fly disease today, April 29.

    The work was completed early this morning.

    The trees involved have been marked with a notice and have small white "implants" inserted into their lower trunks. These will be removed later. In the meantime it is recommended that these "implants" not be touched or disturbed. Keep dogs and children away.

    Natural Lawn will be applying our first organic lawn fertilization treatment tomorrow, April 30.

    It is safe and harmless but you are asked to keep pets and loved ones off the newly treated lawns for 6-8 hours after application to maximize the effectiveness of the application.
